Hair Clip Styling Tips for Every Hair Type
11 EASY Ways to Style HAIR CLIPS for Short Hair (Braidless)

Fine Hair

Fine hair is difficult to tackle with clips because it tends to slip out of the clips. You need the right one, which means a hair clip small in size but strong in grip. Too wide teeth allow hair to fall right through. It’s better to choose narrow claw clips or alligator-style clips with a rubberized interior that helps hold the strands better.

Styling Tip:

The best possible styling tip is to try a half-up twist using a mini claw clip.

  • Pull back a section from the top.
  • Twist it once or twice and clip it with a small claw just above the nape of your neck.
  • It gives volume and keeps things neat without flattening your crown.

Pro Tip:

I personally recommend not using heavy metal clips. They can weigh your hair down and slide right out. They are heavy and irritating to wear, and can also pull on your hair and cause damage. Try to find some lightweight, rubber-lined clips for better control.

Thick Hair

Thick hair looks beautiful, but bulky. People with thick locks are not able to use all types of clips. You need something that can open wide and hold firm, think jumbo claw clips or XL banana clips. The material matters too. Reinforced nylon or bendable plastics are better materials to use. They work for longer under pressure.

Hair Clip Styling Tip:

French twist with a large claw clip is easy yet stylish.

  • Gather your hair into a low ponytail without securing it.
  • Twist upward and tuck the ends inside.
  • Hold the twist by using a claw clip.
  • Your thick hair naturally creates volume and structure, on which this style looks great.

Pro Tip:

Small clips look beautiful, but are not suitable for long hair. You can’t style your hair with them, and also, volume will damage the clips. A clasp with enough inner space to hold your full section without squeezing too tightly is a good option.

Curly or Coily Hair

You need a clip that respects your curl without crushing it. U-shaped hair forks and open claw clips are the most popular. I like fabric-covered snap clips more because of the ease and comfort they provide. These allow your curls to keep their shape while staying secure.

Styling Tip:

Side-swept puff using two flat clips or bobby pins is the best style to create.

  • Brush one side back gently.
  • Secure with clips stacked vertically.
  • It lets your curls roam freely on the other side.

Hair Clip Pro Tip:

Tight or sharp-edged clips can damage your curl pattern. Smooth-edged or satin-lined clips are better options to avoid frizz or breakage.

Straight Hair

It’s struggling to hold clips in place in fine and soft straight hair. Add some dry shampoo or light teasing before applying the clip for texture.

Hair Clip Styling Tip:

A low bun with a flat claw clip is best.

  • Gather your hair at the nape
  • Twist into a bun
  • Secure it with a flat clip horizontally
  • Stay all day without causing discomfort

Pro Tip:

Texturizing spray adds grip. Just a few spritzes before styling can help clips stay put longer, especially for updos.

Wavy Hair

Wavy hair offers volume and texture. They are flexible to handle while styling flexibility. Most clip types work well, but medium-sized claw clips or snap clips are better. They don’t press your waves too flat.

Styling Tip:

Create a loose half-up, half-down look

  • Pull back the front sections
  • Secure with a decorative barrette or snap clip at the back
  • Allow some face-framing pieces to fall naturally for a better look

Short Hair

You can use mini clips and barrettes for short hair styling. Side snap clips also look good. Use fewer accessories in their proper places.

Styling Tip:

Use two small snap clips on one side to tuck your hair behind your ear.  It gives a modern look and works well for pixie cuts or bob styles.

Pro Tip:

Sleek designs are better than bulky catchers. They don’t overpower your hairstyle and cause discomfort.

Medium-Length Hair

Medium hair is easy to style. You can use various hair clip options, from flat clips and claw clips to styling with stacked bobby pins.

Styling Tip:

Try a double-clip twist.

  • Divide your hair into two sections at the back
  • Twist both upward
  • Secure with two parallel claw clips
  • You get a better style with extra flair

Kids’ Hair

Kids have various lengths of hair and need clips most at school and during playtime. Choose soft-grip clips and mini claw clips that don’t pull hair. Children love to wear fabric-covered snap clips because they won’t irritate the scalp.

Kid’s Hair Clip Styling Tip:

Create mini puffs or ponytails and use small claw clips to hold each one in place.
